The Boss 351 Mustang was the new high performance Ford Mustang variant that was offered by Ford beginning in 1971. In 1970 Ford cancelled their previous performance models the Boss 302 and Boss 429 as a result of increasing insurance premiums, and tighter emissions standards. Ford also withdrew from factory sponsored racing and therefore no longer needed a car that held the big block 429 engine.
